Excuse Me, Do You Know Where I Can Get A Healthy Dose Of Laughter?

Here it comes again, oh no, that time of year when our lives become even more stressful. Gasp!  It's the holidays.  It comes from us from every angle (actually the holidays have been coming from every angle in some stores since August). No matter how you hard you try, you cannot get away.... it's all around us.   We have to ponder how are we going to please with that perfect gift, prepare for those get-togethers and purchase for all those in our lives.  We also must ponder how we fulfill our work obligations during this overwhelming time.  While we ponder, our stress meter increases and increases.  So does the intensity and anxiety.

What can we do to get away from all of the intensity and anxiety during this high-stress period? Better yet, for any time we are highly stress?

One prescription could be laughter.  Increasingly researchers are finding that laughter may indeed be one of the best medicines for relieving stress in our lives.  Simply put, the benefits of laughing everyday (according to a University of Maryland study) reduces stress hormones, is good for the immune system, may reduce pain, may reduce heart disease and lowers blood pressure.

Incorporating laughter in your life can, in my opinion, turn a bad day into a good day instantly.  Laughter in the workplace can also bring a sense of camaraderie with your co-workers and make your work a little less stressful.   Laughter in your personal life can help relieve some of your stresses, especially during the holiday season.  Laughter is fun.  Laughter is positive.   To me life and work are  much easier when you laugh and it personally helps me remain positive when I am struggling to get it all done or when things don't seem so positive.

In today's high-demand world we must do all we can do to help reduce stress. As I have discussed before, stress it is thought, may be the cause of a number of serious illnesses.   The next time things get so overwhelming for you, especially during the high-stress holiday season, take a healthy dose of laughter.

Recommendations for increasing laughter:

  • Go see a funny movie
  • Read a funny book
  • Surround yourself with positive people
  • Watch something funny on TV
  • Recall funny childhood memories
  • Tell funny stories
