Are You Too Cool To Go Green?
The nouveau riche terminology for living and increasing awareness about the environment is Going Green.
Everyone these days it seems, is joining in and becoming part of the green movement. In fact, NBC Universal this weekend will begin their Green Week series to increase awareness about environmental issues and climate change with an outcome I would think for more of us to change the way we live in order to sustain where we live. Global Warming issues in the United States have for the most part sparked debate among politicians, if you believe it exists, then you must be a liberal and if you believe it doesn't then a definite conservative. Now, though, I believe we are seeing some sort of transformation of beliefs that transcend political lines or parties. Suddenly, it is becoming COOL to Go Green. Suddenly, conservatives and liberals alike are joining forces to help raise awareness about climate change and the environment. It also is sparking another great debate about whether this increase in interest is all hype or something that will become the normal way of life into the future. I personally hope it is the latter.
I remember first hearing about the sustainability and the environment in high school. It was a lecture by my political science teacher on the environment and how it relates to politics. I remember being stunned, when I heard that we would run out of natural resources not in the too far distant future. I also remember leaving class that day, feeling scared, maybe helpless and certainly having no knowledge of how I could personally help solve the problem. Today, I feel I can make a difference, even if it is just in small ways.
Going Green is definitely a trend for the future in the home and in the workplace.
In our everyday business world green technology is the trend. A friend of mine introduce me recently to the term "green technology." As defined by the Green-Technology organization: the term “technology” refers to the application of knowledge for practical purposes. The field of “green technology” encompasses a continuously evolving group of methods and materials, from techniques for generating energy to non-toxic cleaning products. The present expectation is that this field will bring innovation and changes in daily life of similar magnitude to the “information technology” explosion over the last two decades. In these early stages, it is impossible to predict what “green technology” may eventually encompass.
The goals that inform developments in this rapidly growing field include:
Sustainability - “Cradle to cradle” design - Source reduction-Innovation - Viability
A green workplace is probably not too far out of reach for most of us, as more and more corporations are taking note of the benefits of green technology. Going green is something you definitely must decide on your own to do, but the evidence that is available on climate change is startling. Before you decide that you are too cool to go green, do some research.
